Credit Report Mistakes

Kelly Participates in Federal Government Workshop on Consumer Reporting

Kelly Guzzo’s Kristi Kelly, a nationally-recognized attorney on credit reporting issues, was invited to participate in a recent federal government workshop on accuracy in consumer reporting.

The workshop was jointly hosted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on December 10, 2019 in Washington, DC.  The FTC and CFPB are the two federal agencies most directly responsible for overseeing the credit reporting industry and enforcing consumer protection statutes.

The workshop sought to bring together a broad spectrum of consumer reporting stakeholders from across the nation, including industry representatives, consumer advocates, and government regulators, to discuss recent issues surrounding the accuracy of credit reports as well as employment and tenant background screening reports.

Kelly lent her expertise to a panel discussion on navigating the dispute process with credit reporting agencies.  She emphasized the difficulty consumers have resolving inaccuracies when – given the proliferation in recent years of entities that collect and sell consumer data – the source of the inaccuracy is not always clear.

A video recording and transcript of the workshop can be accessed on the FTC’s webpage for the event.  Additionally, the FTC and CFPB are seeking public comments on consumer reporting accuracy issues.  The deadline to submit comments is January 31, 2020.

We are pleased to see federal regulators taking an interest in consumer reporting inaccuracies, which can have devastating consequences on consumers nationwide.  If you have been negatively impacted by a reporting error, please contact our office to see if we can help.
